Part grocery, part lunch spot, Épicerie L’Idéal captures the spirit of Marseille better than almost anywhere else in the city. Set in the heart of Noailles, one of Marseille’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, it draws together flavours, products and stories from across the Mediterranean.

Created by Julia Sammut, a food writer and tireless scout of producers, the shop is built on a simple principle: sell only what is genuinely worth taking home. Shelves are lined with carefully sourced ingredients, from exceptional olive oils and cheeses to tinned fish, charcuterie, spices, chocolates and pantry staples chosen for their character rather than their labels.

The daily lunch offering follows the same philosophy. Plates change with the seasons and the arrivals from producers, making each visit slightly different from the last. The atmosphere remains informal and welcoming, whether stopping by for a quick coffee, a leisurely lunch or a basket of provisions.
