Widely regarded as serving the best pan bagnat in Marseille, Boissonnerie has become something of a local institution, with queues often forming well before lunchtime.
After building a loyal following from her bicycle-powered sandwich cart in Les Goudes, Cécilia Bonacchi has settled into a permanent home in her great-grandfather’s former fisherman’s cottage overlooking the sea. The small café, complete with a terrace facing the Mediterranean, attracts locals, swimmers and hikers heading into the calanques.
The main draw is her much-loved pan bagnat, prepared according to the traditional recipe using carefully sourced Mediterranean ingredients, including market vegetables, Collioure anchovies and olives from Puglia. Other favourites include a tomato and mozzarella di bufala sandwich served in a soft brioche bun, a warm croissant filled with coppa and brousse du Rove, seasonal tramezzini, fresh juices, specialty coffee, Italian aperitifs and a small selection of wines.
