The Charles Hotel

Munich,
Germany

Editor’s Note

"The Charles Hotel has a quiet and residential atmosphere - it feels like a home away from home. The convenience of its location is a real stand-out for me: it backs onto the tranquil Old Botanical Garden, sits close to Königsplatz and the museum quarter, and is just a 5 to 10-minute walk from Munich's Old Town. Exclusive shopping streets such as Maximilianstrasse and Theatinerstrasse are also within easy reach."

Review

Munich pairs grand Bavarian architecture with an easy-going, energetic pace of life, and The Charles Hotel puts much of it within walking distance. Beyond the city’s galleries and ornate landmarks, Munich’s character emerges in places such as the historic Hofbräuhaus, where its convivial spirit can be felt year-round.

Stepping into The Charles Hotel, the interiors feel both expansive yet cocooning. Softened by greenery and flooded with natural light, its considered architecture creates a peaceful, secluded ambience despite being at the heart of a bustling city.

Designed by Olga Polizzi, the hotel is inspired by the surrounding plants and alludes to the former university library building. After complete refurbishment in early 2025, the hotel’s 160 rooms and suites feel bright, modern and airy, with natural colours, materials and large windows framing the Old Botanical Garden, Munich streets and, on a clear day, the mountains beyond. All standard rooms are generous in size at 40sqm.

Its restaurant, Florio, brings authentic aromas of Italy. Based on recipes created by Rocco Forte Hotels’ Creative Director of Food, Fulvio Pierangelini, it serves simple yet exquisite dishes prepared from carefully selected ingredients. Its sister establishment, Florio Bar, invites guests to sink into the comfortable armchairs among marble tables and botanical surroundings for aperitivo drinks. For a more intimate atmosphere, The Circle Bar brings an Art Deco feel. Its name is derived from the shape of the space and the red steel ring by Italian artist Mauro Staccioli on the square in front of the hotel. It’s an all-day space offering champagne as well as afternoon tea and patisserie creations.

And beneath the hotel is another retreat entirely. The 800sqm spa includes a 15-metre-long pool, heated loungers, sauna, steam bath and relaxation zones, alongside a Technogym fitness centre. Irene Forte Skincare and Swiss Cellcosmet treatments, as well as Pilates, Tai Chi and yoga classes, are offered.
