Exquisite Day
Begin with Lisbon at your doorstep, return for a sommelier-led tasting, then settle in FEDERICO for a luxurious evening centred around a glass of wine.
Editor’s Note
Palácio Ludovice has one of the best addresses in Lisbon, between Chiado, Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real, with the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara just outside. It would be a remarkable place even without the history, but this 18th-century palace brings more than location.
Once the private residence of João Frederico Ludovice, architect to King João V, the building has watched Lisbon change around it for more than 300 years. It survived the 1755 earthquake thanks to an innovative anti-seismic technique, later used in the reconstruction of the city. Since then, the palace has held shops, aristocratic apartments, the Russian consulate and, from 1945, the Solar do Vinho do Porto. Today, after a careful restoration by architect Miguel Câncio Martins, it has become Lisbon’s only Wine Experience hotel.
Wine is not a decorative theme here. There are wine-based Palácio Ludovice in-room amenities, a house scent and interiors shaped around the theme, more than 100 Portuguese wine references across all 14 wine regions, and daily guided tastings. Guests are welcomed with a glass of Port at the bar, while the cocktail list are wine-based, with the names playfully inspired by pop and rock classics: ‘Nothing Compares 2 Wine’ (Sinéad O’Conner) to ‘I Will Always Love Wine’ (Whitney Houston).
The hotel is also home to the Port Wine Institute shop, the official representative of the Duoro and Port wine region. Its presence feels especially fitting given the palace’s long relationship with Port.
The 61 rooms and suites feel generous for a city hotel, with walk-in rainfall showers, pillow menus, private in-room check-in and views that range from serene courtyards to Lisbon rooftops and the viewpoint beyond. The Ludovice Prestige rooms offer the most expansive outlook, while the suites bring a more residential sense of space.
At FEDERICO Restaurant & Wine Bar, the palace courtyard becomes the heart of the hotel. Seasonal dishes are paired with Portuguese wines, including Palácio Ludovice’s own white, red and rosé. Downstairs, the bar’s vaulted brick ceiling and cellar-lined counter create a moody, cosmopolitan setting made for lingering.
The wine experience even runs through to the Caudalie Boutique-Spa, the brand’s first in Lisbon. Treatments are inspired by Vinothérapie rituals, using natural active ingredients from grapes and grapevines.
Palácio Ludovice carries its grandeur gracefully, with history in the walls and Lisbon’s love of wine poured into the experience.

Locals celebrate various saints in June, so if you want to absorb as much atmosphere and celebration unique to Portugal, June is the month to go.
The old cellar bar, with its vaulted brick ceiling and wine-lined counter, feels atmospheric without being overly dramatic. It always draws guests in for “just one more glass”.
A glass of Port captures the hotel’s spirit, linking its Lisbon palace setting with the Duoro heritage that still shapes the experience.
