Orania.Berlin takes on a building that was once a famous café known for concerts and cabarets. Its history is echoed today in the regular live-music programme staged in the ground-level lounge four nights a week. At its centre sits a large, open-plan “Living Room”, part restaurant, part bar, part lounge, bookended by two fireplaces in winter, wrapped in enormous windows and anchored by a raised stage with a Steinway piano.
The crowd is a lively mix of chic locals and hip leisure travellers, drawn together by the buzzy nightlife just outside the door. The 41 rooms and suites vary in size but share a design language of rich exotic woods, deep red textiles patterned with the hotel’s signature gold elephant, handmade Persian carpets and curvaceous Enzo Catellani lamps. Double-glazed windows keep the street noise out. Although some feature French balconies, if you still want to soak up the atmosphere at a distance. Marble bathrooms come with walk-in rainforest showers (some with soaking tubs) and the beds are handmade by German maker Schramm. The in-room touches feel very considered too. Vegan bath products from Berlin’s i+m, flat-screens with Apple TV and a lobby bar with high-backed stools built for lingering with a glass or two. The property is dog-friendly too.
Breakfast runs until 2pm (which hangovers will greatly appreciate) at the Breakfast Club, with a buffet till noon and à la carte extras like waffles and smoothies. Orania.Restaurant serves a five-course Kreuzberg spin on Peking duck, plus vegan and seasonal international options. Don’t miss the top-floor salon and library, its floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies delivering a truly five-star skyline view.
