Kalesma Mykonos

Mykonos ,
Greece

Editor’s Note

"Overlooking a beautiful peninsula of Mykonos, Kalesma - meaning ‘inviting’ in Greek – is exactly that, in a way that feels both generous and grounded. A scattering of whitewashed suites and villas spills down a sun-bleached hillside, where Cycladic lines dissolve into the Aegean horizon and morning coffee slips, almost unnoticed, into sunset cocktails. This is a slower, more personal side of the island, shaped by local ritual and open-air living. At the centre of it all is Pere Ubu, the main restaurant, which prides itself on a menu that leans on local ingredients and Mykonian recipes. Your day will revolve around exquisite food, from an extensive breakfast menu to all-day mezze, finished with a dinner focused on accomplished, flavourful dishes. "

Review

Kalesma sits high above Aleomandra Bay with a clear view across the water to Delos. The position gives the hotel a sense of remove from Mykonos at its busiest. You still feel the island around you, but it’s softer. The light gently changes throughout the day. Early morning feels completely different from sunset, even from the same spot.

Designed by K-Studio and Vangelis Bonios, the hotel follows the shape of the hillside instead of flattening it out. The buildings are low and white. They’re spaced apart, like a small Cycladic village. Walking through the property, you turn a corner and suddenly there’s another terrace, another view, another staircase disappearing between the stone walls. An old alonis (threshing stone) was found during construction and left where it was. It now sits at the centre of the hotel, keeping the history of the place at its core.

That grounded feeling carries through to the food. Kalesma is really about gastronomy. Pere Ubu is the fine dining restaurant, which, the hotel itself notes, brings “a thoughtful, relaxed sophistication to both the food and the atmosphere”. It’s led by Executive Chef Costas Tsingas, who trained in New York and Athens before becoming culinary director of the 2004 Olympic Village. The menu changes around what is available on the island at the time. Some ingredients come directly from his own garden nearby. The food feels confident without becoming complicated. Nothing arrives covered in unnecessary detail or explanation.

Kuveda is more relaxed. It follows the style of a traditional Greek kafenio, so people drift in and out throughout the day rather than arriving for a formal sitting. Breakfast stretches into lunch very easily here. Fresh bread appears every morning. The cooking stays simple and nobody rushes you through the meal. It is this unforced pace that makes Kalesma feel so personal. The hotel keeps you close to Mykonos, drawing you into a version of it that is slower and more grounded in everyday island life.

The Aloni Sunset Lounge is where everyone eventually ends up in the evening. The fire pit is built around the original threshing stone, and the view towards Delos becomes golden just before dark. Across all three places, the idea is consistent: “a table with a memory.” A phrase that could describe Kalesma as a whole. The pace here is set by the people, not by a clock. Breakfast has no fixed end; there’s nowhere you have to be in the afternoon. Gastronomy at Kalesma is the clearest way the hotel expresses its carrying of the old Mykonos into the present. The spa, wellness programming and accommodation are excellent, though it’s the food and the culture around it that make it most memorable.

The same thoughtful approach extends to Kalesma’s wellness offering. From the indoor spa to the Open-Air Wellness Sanctuary, guests can experience Dr. Barbara Sturm facial treatments and Beau Domaine treatments, alongside hydrotherapy, a hammam, sauna and cold plunge.

Highlights

Exquisite Day

Wake slowly to fresh bread baked that morning, then let breakfast stretch as long as you want. Spend the afternoon by the pool or over sharing-style mezedes at Kuveda, before a Greek varietal wine tasting and a sunset evening at Aloni.

Optimal Timing

June is the most atmospheric time to visit Kalesma. The restored aloni comes into use after the barley harvest, with threshing carried out as it once was. It ends in a small panigyri (traditional festival), with wine, music and food made from the grain pressed on site.

Outstanding Space

The Aloni Sunset Lounge, built around the ancient threshing stone discovered on-site, is the hotel's social heart at dusk with its fire pit and Aegean views towards Delos.

Emblematic Object

The aloni - the traditional threshing stone found during construction and preserved in situ - defines the hotel's architectural and philosophical stance.
