Settled 500 metres above Lake Lucerne on the Bürgenberg mountainside, Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne is more like a small luxury village folded into the Swiss Alps than just a hotel. This historic resort brings together several hotels, a 10,000 sqm spa complex, restaurants, bars and outdoor experiences, all connected by panoramic walking paths and extraordinary views across the lake and surrounding peaks.
The resort first opened back in 1873. Now, it is a striking mix of Belle Époque glamour and sleek modern design. Guests can move freely between three distinct hotel concepts depending on the atmosphere they want from their stay. The main hotel, Bürgenstock Resort, houses 211 rooms and 17 resident suites behind floor-to-ceiling glass walls, each framing the lake directly.
Dining forms a huge part of the experience here, with restaurants and lounges scattered across the mountainside, each offering a different atmosphere and perspective over the lake. Guests can move from elegant Swiss dining terraces to Persian specialities at Parisa, farm-to-table cooking and wood-fired grills at Spices Kitchen & Terrace or relaxed afternoon teas and cocktails at the Lakeview Lounge & Bar. Elsewhere, traditional Italian dishes, French brasserie classics and refined cigar lounges add to the feeling that the resort operates almost as its own self-contained destination.
What makes the resort particularly memorable is its sense of scale. One moment you are floating in the heated outdoor infinity pool at the 10,000 sqm Alpine Spa; the next, hiking forest trails, playing golf, taking the historic funicular down towards the lake or lingering over lunch on a terrace absorbing the panoramic view of the Alps. The feeling persists throughout the resort, where seemingly every path leads to another restaurant, viewpoint, wellness space or hidden corner of the mountainside.
Even the wellness offering reflects this ambition. Extending across 10,000 sqm, the Alpine Spa includes an extensive collection of treatment rooms, saunas and relaxation spaces and the undeniable centrepiece: the outdoor infinity-edge pool. It’s no wonder many regard it as the best spa in Europe.
Although spectacular in winter, Bürgenstock is far from a pure ski-season destination. In summer, the mountains become a backdrop for golf, boating, hiking and long afternoons spent outdoors. Arriving by catamaran across Lake Lucerne before ascending the mountainside on the historic funicular only adds to the sense that you are entering somewhere entirely separate from everyday life.
