Gran Hotel Mas d’en Bruno is nestled right in the Priorat vineyards, with rolling hills and that wild, tranquil beauty of rural Catalonia all around. You feel that sense of place the moment you arrive. But what really sticks with you is how they’ve managed to mix that history with really confident modern design. The main building, a Catalan masia from way back in 1791, still has its original stonework, wooden beams and old farming touches, all kept with care. Instead of just making it a standard country hotel, they’ve paired these old remnants with smooth wood, earthy marble, interesting furniture and clean architectural lines. The newer Atelier building follows the same idea, integrating into the landscape and facing the vineyards. All 24 suites are lavishly decorated, with huge beds, fresh bathrooms, fireplaces and private terraces – they feel generous without being over the top.
Outdoors, the 25-meter infinity pool seems to flow right between the terracotta buildings and the Mediterranean gardens. There are these cabanas tucked away with plants, offering private spots to relax, with steps leading straight into the water and views stretching across the vines. The spa is just as special, set up in the old winery, with pieces of the estate’s archaeology showing through, along with warm pools, a Jacuzzi, sauna and hammam.
Wine is really the reason one visits. The cellar, all redone, offers tastings of Priorat and Montsant wines. Then there’s Vinum, serving up a complete gastronomic experience in two exceptional settings – the dining room and out on terraces with panoramas of the vineyards and mountains. Tarraco is a more casual spot by the pool, and Bruno’s Bar offers cocktails in a place where old stone meets modern style.
Mas d’en Bruno feels high-end, but it never feels disconnected from where it is. The best thing they’ve done is make sure the restoration didn’t erase the estate’s character. Everything feels thoughtful, calm and current, while the landscape, the wine and the history of Priorat are clearly the focus for your whole stay.
