This is a property that prides itself on its attentiveness, both in its design and hospitality. Despite the building’s scale, the hotel has only nine rooms. This may sound limiting, until you realise that nine rooms means your name is known by check-in and your preferences are remembered by dinner. The dedicated team is on hand to ensure maximum comfort and relaxation. Such personal attention is rare to sustain in a larger hotel.
The nine rooms range from Superior 33sqm options to a 72sqm Penthouse, and are designed for spatial clarity. In Room Three, the cathedral is framed directly, while the Penthouse Suite integrates an exclusive private entrance and a terrace plunge pool. The contrast between contemporary interior precision and 16th-century stone reinforces the hotel’s theme of marrying tradition with modernity.
Dinner is served in Coro, a former church whose majestic arches and candlelight create an atmosphere of such theatrical beauty that the food had better be good. And it is. The kitchen’s modern take on Umbrian classics of truffles, lentils and slow-braised meats creatively honours the past as much as its surrounding does. Before all that, the Gocce courtyard bar, with its terracotta chairs reminiscent of the Duomo and gentle lighting, makes for the perfect place to unwind while sipping one of their signature cocktails.
Orvieto itself has much attraction: the Duomo, the subterranean Etruscan tunnels, the ceramic workshops, the local Orvieto Classico that’s poured freely in every bar. The hotel’s concierge will also arrange truffle hunts, pottery lessons, a boat on Lake Bolsena or a horse ride through the Umbrian countryside – any bespoke programme will gladly be assembled.
