Opened in 1949 by the Conde family, Bodega Cigaleña remains one of Santander’s essential addresses for wine and traditional Cantabrian cooking. Behind its iron gates is a maze of dining rooms and cellars lined with bottles, with one of the most serious wine selections in northern Spain, ranging from mature classics to natural producers from across Europe.
The kitchen balances long standing house dishes with more contemporary touches while staying firmly focused on product and seasonality. Expect excellent rabas de calamar, fritos, octopus prepared to order and generous plates designed for sharing over bottles. A deeply local place that still feels rooted in old Santander, best experienced slowly, with time for both food and wine.
