Verina Astra Hotel

Sifnos,
Greece

Editor’s Note

"Here the division between inside and outside disappears almost completely, much like the horizon between sea and sky. Everything is easy, no decisions to make, no hesitation. You start running on instinct, immediate desires. All is peaceful, airy and beauty creeps in."

Review

There are places where the horizon stretches out in front of you, allowing for a sort of hazy peacefulness to settle. Exhale. Verina Astra in Sifnos is one of those places. On the Eastern edge of the island, above the rugged coastal area of Poulati, the hotel is built directly into the slope. The layout follows the lay of the land, each level opening towards the Aegean sea. From every point, the horizon holds steady, sea and sky meeting in an impressionistic calm.

Sifnos has long enjoyed a unique reputation within the Cyclades. Defined by its food, ceramic tradition, and villages that remain active year-round. Artemonas, one of the main villages on the island, sits just a few minutes away.

All named after constellations and all facing the sea, the hotel includes sixteen rooms and suites. Each opens onto a private terrace or veranda, often large enough to take over daily life, appointed with with tables, daybeds, and in some cases outdoor showers. Interiors are simple: stone floors, linen, wood, and subtle tones that encourage plays of light throughout the day. Some of the original rooms have a more traditional vibe with coloured shutters.

Chef Nikos Thomas leads the kitchen of Bostani, the hotel’s central restaurant and a defining part of the Verina experience. Set within the garden, it works closely with seasonal ingredients tied to Sifnian cooking, with much of what is served drawn directly from the surrounding land or sourced from local producers. Service is steady and unobtrusive. The hotel remains family-run, and the tone reflects this: present when needed, otherwise discreet.

The saltwater pool sits at the edge of the slope, the water shimmers with colours that align closely with the sea beyond. Seating is bohemian, parasols, cushions, low loungers, leading one to stretch out, totally at ease. The spa is arranged in open cabanas, with treatments based on ELEMIS protocols and local botanicals.

Paths run between the suites, the pool, the restaurant, and the spa, lined with lavender, herbs, and Mediterranean plants. As each structure sits apart, movement across the property, happens outdoors, providing serene breathing space. Like pauses in a sentence. The distances, the relationship with the sea, the spaces in between, all shape the pace of the stay. Serene.

Highlights

Exquisite Day

Breakfast on the terrace. Late morning by the pool. Lunch at Bostani or something simple on the veranda. Afternoons move between shade and sun, with the sea always in view. Evenings extend slowly, a drink; dinner as the light drops.

Optimal Timing

June through September. Sea breeze brings constant airflow, keeping temperatures more agreeable than elsewhere in the Cyclades. May and early October are quieter, with softer light.

Outstanding Space

The terraces take over from indoor spaces for most of the day. Large, private, and populated by low-key chic couples, quietly conversing, reading or simply pondering life.

Emblematic Object

The saltwater infinity pool. Set at the edge of the slope, it aligns closely with the colours of the Aegean sea, creating an uninterrupted horizon, while providing an immersive bodily experience.

Best Enjoyed With

A dreamer, a reader, someone who can contemplate the horizon or sit over a souma (traditional drink) for hours.
