Founded in 1962, Cervejaria Gazela is a landmark snack-bar near Praça da Batalha best known for its signature cachorrinho: a crisp-edged roll filled with a Portuguese pork sausage, melted cheese and spicy sauce — quite unlike a typical hot-dog, and a true local flavour.
The menu also includes a decent rendition of the famed Porto dish, the francesinha — a layered sandwich of bread, meats and cheese, drowned in rich tomato-beer sauce and often topped with a fried egg. The atmosphere is brisk, no reservations, queue likely, but the result hits a genuine slice of Porto’s casual food culture.
